Melbourne Design Awards 2012

50 projects are honoured at this year’s Melbourne Design Awards.

The 50 winners of the 2012 Melbourne Design Awards were revealed at a ceremony held in Melbourne on 19 September. Recognising a broad cross-section of design projects ranging from interior design and architecture to graphic design, retail and fashion, the winners were selected by a combination of votes cast by a judging panel and the public through online voting.

studio505’s work on the Wintergarden Facade in Brisbane was the winner of the Architecture Commercial award, while the Keast Park Community Pavilion in Frankston by Jackson Clements Burrows was the winner of the Mixed-Use Architecture award.

McBride Charles Ryan and BENT Architecture were joint winners in the Residential Architecture category for their respective projects, Cloud House and ‘Living Places’ Suburban Revival. Two projects by Melbourne Design Studios were recognised at the awards: Birkenstock Australia HQ was the winner in the Commercial Architecture – Proposed category, while the concept for MDS PassivHaus was rewarded in the Residential Architecture – Proposed category.

Among the interior design winners were Matt Gibson Architecture + Design and Bild Architecture, both winners in the residential category for their respective projects, Kooyong Residence and Un-Waste Bookcase. Robert Simeoni Architects’ Good Shepherd Chapel in Abbotsford was rewarded in the Public/Institutional Interior Design category, while Perrett Ewert Leaf’s Hawk and Hunter Cafe in Ripponlea was honoured in the Corporate/Hospitality Interior Design category.

Molecule’s Grong Grong – a residential project in Toorak – was the winner of the Interior Decoration award. The Landscape Architecture award was presented to The Greenwall Company for their 22-storey greenwall inside Origin’s Melbourne head office, called The Origin Energy Project. City Leaks’ “playground for urban dwellers” in Drewery Alley in the CBD – called PlayMo – was the winner of the Urban Design award.

Among the product design categories, Ross Didier’s furniture designs for restaurant, Vue de monde, and CAJA’s collection of versatile cubes were both winners in the Furniture category, while the Homewares winner was LOBE’s glassware collection made from re-purposed glass bottles, called In the Spirit. Brightgreen’s D900 Cube, a square beamed LED downlight, was the winner of the Lighting category.

Other winners include Poliform (Design Retailer – less than 5 shops), Open House Melbourne 2012 and agIdeas International Design Week (Design Event), Hoyne Design’s Great Dane Catalogue, ‘The Great Life’ (Graphic Design Publication), lighting on Lonsdale Street, Dandenong by Electrolight (Lighting Design) and Büro North’s work on The Royal Children’s Hospital, Melbourne (Wayfinding).

Now in their third year, the Melbourne Design Awards this year attracted 550 entries – of which 225 were shortlisted. Over 4500 votes were made from design professionals, with almost 4000 further votes cast by the public. The Melbourne Design Awards form part of design100 – an awards platform that works to increase design literacy in the public sphere and improve business acumen within the design industry.
